Man Arrested After Threatening to Burn Down JoCo Elementary School

On November 6, 2023, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service at Fort Vannoy School in the 5000 block of Upper River Road. The caller reported a troubling situation involving a male subject who had arrived at the school armed with a can of gasoline and a stick, making threats to burn the school down and causing harm to staff members. In response to the immediate threat, the school implemented a lockdown procedure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Deputies arrived on the scene and located the individual, identified as 33-year-old George Muse, on the roadway outside the school. When given commands by law enforcement, Muse attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Upon further investigation, the deputies discovered the can of gasoline and the stick near the school’s fence line. Both school staff and law enforcement conducted thorough sweeps of the area to ensure there were no additional threats before lifting the lockdown.

Muse was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. He has been lodged in the Josephine County Jail, facing charges of Disorderly Conduct I and Attempted Escape III.

At this time, no further details have been disclosed regarding the incident.
