No Injuries After Fire in Downtown Apartment Building

At around 12:20p on Friday, Medford firefighting crews rushed to the scene of a structure fire at the Concord Apartments located at 100 Grape N. St. Thankfully, upon arrival, the fire had already been mostly extinguished by the reporting party, preventing further spread.

The efforts of the occupant and firefighters played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the numerous residents, allowing them to remain in their apartments. Crews promptly ventilated the apartment to clear out smoke and removed the burnt bedding materials and mattress.

The fire’s origin was traced back to two unsupervised juveniles who had been playing with a lighter in their bedroom. The sheets on their bed caught fire, igniting a potentially dangerous situation. The caregiver was in a different room at the time, and the alarm was raised when one of the children ran down the hall to alert others about the fire.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, thanks in part to the functioning smoke alarms within the apartment and the central fire alarm system for the building. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of matches and lighters when they fall into children’s hands.

Authorities urge all caregivers and parents to take precautions by storing matches and lighters out of reach, preferably in a high cabinet and, if possible, a locked one. Safety should always be a top priority when it comes to children and potential fire hazards.

This incident underscores the importance of fire safety awareness in our communities and serves as a reminder that quick thinking and preparedness can make all the difference in preventing potential disasters.
