One Dead and Two Injured During Officer Involved Shooting

The Oregon State Police major crimes section has launched an active investigation into an officer-involved shooting at the request of the Polk County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, September 30, around 1:30 A.M., when an Independence Police Officer initiated a routine traffic stop. However, the suspect vehicle chose to flee, leading to a pursuit that lasted until officers successfully deployed spike strips, disabling the fleeing vehicle. Subsequently, the suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.

Law enforcement officers responded to the scene, where they managed to locate the suspect as he tried to flee in another vehicle. The situation escalated when the suspect opened fire on the responding officers, resulting in a Polk County Deputy being struck. In response to this imminent threat, law enforcement officers discharged their weapons. The condition of the officer was not provided thus evening..

As a result of the gunfire exchange, one suspect was fatally injured, while another sustained injuries. The original suspect, responsible for the initial traffic stop, has been arrested.

Despite the situation, there is currently no reason to believe that there is any ongoing danger to the public at this time. Law enforcement agencies have secured the area and are ensuring public safety.
