In a proactive effort to ensure public safety during the ongoing fire season, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) carried out a thorough fire safety patrol along the Bear Creek Greenway earlier today. The operation, aimed at enforcing the closure of off-trail areas, resulted in three arrests.

The focus area of Bear Creek Greenway, spanning from south Medford to Talent, has been subject to a temporary closure as mandated by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. This precautionary measure was put in place to safeguard both the community and the environment from the heightened risk of wildfires during the 2023 fire season.
While all community members are still permitted to use the paved paths within the Greenway, all off-trail sections have been off-limits. JCSO deputies undertook the responsibility of patrolling the County-owned segments of the Greenway, ensuring that the closure was being adhered to and preventing any potential violations.
During the course of their patrol, deputies encountered several encampments littered with trash and human waste, underscoring the importance of these safety measures. As a result of their efforts, three individuals were taken into custody. Two arrests were made for trespassing and offensive littering, while a third individual was apprehended due to an active warrant.
In addition to enforcement actions, JCSO deputies also extended assistance to those in need. They distributed detailed maps outlining the restricted areas and offered a comprehensive list of resources tailored to support the homeless population. This compassionate approach reflects the commitment of law enforcement to ensure the well-being of all community members, even as they uphold vital safety regulations.
These fire safety patrols constitute a routine part of the efforts undertaken by JCSO during the fire season. By diligently enforcing closures and offering support where needed, law enforcement agencies like JCSO play a pivotal role in safeguarding both the community and the environment from the threat of wildfires.
