Photo Radar Cameras Coming to Major NE Medford Intersection

The Medford Police Department (MPD) is has announced the pending installation of a new fixed-site photo red light and speed camera at the intersection of Crater Lake Hwy (OR62) at Delta Waters Rd. Starting from Monday, July 24, construction will begin, and the system is set to become operational on Monday, August 21, capturing violations at the intersection.

The MPD’s photo radar program has been in operation since 2004 and officials state they have proven effective in improving traffic safety. Presently, photo radar cameras are already installed at four intersections across the city: E. Barnett Rd./Stewart Ave., E. McAndrews Rd./Biddle Rd., Riverside Ave./8th St., and Central Ave./4th St.

To ensure a smooth transition and enhance communication, there will be an educational period starting on Monday, August 21, lasting for 30 days. During this period, warning letters will be sent to those observed committing violations at the new intersection, monitoring both speed infractions and red-light violations from multiple approaches.

Actual citations will not be issued until Wednesday, September 20, following the completion of the educational/warning period.

A survey conducted in 2022 showed that 74% of the public surveyed rated the photo radar program as “very good to satisfactory.” The majority of respondents believed that the program significantly improved traffic safety. MPD has observed a decline in crashes at photo-enforced intersections as well as nearby intersections, affirming the effectiveness of this safety measure.

Lieutenant Geoff Kirkpatrick explains that the decision to place the new camera at the Crater Lake Highway and Delta Waters Road intersection was influenced by a “spillover effect.” Although the most dangerous intersection was identified at Crater Lake Highway and Poplar Drive, various factors prevented the installation of photo radar cameras there.

MPD acknowledges that speed remains a significant factor in serious vehicle crashes nationwide. Studies have shown a correlation between speed enforcement and the reduction in serious traffic accidents. The utilization of technology to facilitate speed and red-light enforcement serves as a force multiplier in enhancing traffic safety, aligning with recommendations from the 2022 Level-of-Service study conducted by the Center for Public Safety Management.

Through their continued efforts in traffic safety initiatives, MPD remarks the department seeks to create a safer environment for everyone on the city’s roadways.
