Truck Driver Hospitalized After I5 Shooting in Northern Jackson County

A 42 year old male driver employed by a local truck company was shot while traveling from Medford to Roseburg on Saturday, July 8th. At around 6:00 – 6:30 PM, as the driver approached the Rogue River exit, the passenger window suddenly shattered, causing him to feel a sharp pain. The incident occurred in close proximity to a church just before the mill to the east of I5.

Unaware of what had transpired, the driver promptly pulled over to the side of the road. It was then that he noticed a significant amount of blood dripping from his right hand, assuming it was due to a cut caused by the broken glass. Alarmed by the blood loss and experiencing a sharp pain in his side, the driver dialed 911 for assistance.

According to the Oregon State Police log of the incident, a Trooper arrived at the scene at 6:58p to aid the driver. First responders detected a bullet fragment lodged in the back of the driver’s right shoulder, confirming that the driver had indeed been shot. Additional troopers, Jackson County Sheriff’s (JCSO) units, Rogue River Police (RRPD) and an ambulance were called to secure the crime scene and provide medical attention.

An individual with inside knowledge of the incident told Medford Alert that law enforcement officers visited residences along the stretch of road where the incident occurred in an attempt to gather information about the suspect’s identity and whereabouts.

A family member told Medford Alert that the driver is currently in stable condition, although he sustained a single gunshot wound. The bullet remains in his lung due to the complexities involved in its removal. After spending two days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the driver has been transferred to the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) of ARRMC. While his recovery will be lengthy, the prognosis is positive.

The driver’s family is seeking answers and encourages anyone with relevant information to contact local law enforcement, referencing case number SP23208693, as the investigation is being led by the Oregon State Police.
