Three-Day Prescribed Burn Near Central Point Begins June 21st

Grayback Forestry Inc., a forestry company, is set to coordinate a one to three-day prescribed fire as part of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)’s Vernal Pool restoration project. The controlled burn is scheduled to take place on the Whetstone Savannah, a rural area located north of Gibbon Rd and south of West Gregory Roads.

With due consideration given to permits, weather conditions, moisture levels, and wind factors, the controlled burn is expected to commence on June 21. Grayback Forestry, Inc. will oversee the burn operation, utilizing their highly skilled and experienced crew. The process is anticipated to last approximately 3-4 hours.

This undertaking builds upon the success of previous ecological burns, which have proven effective in restoring and maintaining the native prairie habitat in this unique location. The 100-acre ODOT Whetstone Prairie stands as a testament to the positive ecological impact of these controlled burns.

One of the primary objectives of the prescribed fire is to enhance public safety by eliminating dried vegetation that poses a potential risk for unplanned wildfire ignition. By reducing the fuel load in the area, the controlled burn will minimize the threat of wildfires and safeguard the surrounding communities.

Assurances have been made that the burn conditions will comply with Oregon’s air quality standards, ensuring proper ventilation and minimizing the impact of smoke on neighboring areas and the Rogue Valley community. The smoke from the dry grass is expected to rise above the neighboring regions and disperse quickly from the valley, avoiding prolonged exposure and inconvenience.

To keep the public informed, an update regarding the scheduled burn will be promptly communicated to media outlets and also made available on TripCheck.com. This way, residents and interested parties can stay up to date with the progress and any necessary information related to the operation.
