Early information from the US Geological Survey showed that at 2:34a, an earthquake took place about 7.5 miles southwest of Ferndale California, approximately 200 miles from Medford.
The tremor was a 6.4 magnitude, according to officials’ early reporting.


Humboldt County California released the following information on their social media outlets: “Due to a large earthquake, widespread damages to roads and homes are reported throughout Humboldt County. Be prepared for aftershocks. Check gas and water lines for damages or leaks. Exercise caution if traveling.”
At this time, Caltrans is assessing roadways for safety, travel in the area is not recommended. Approximately 70,000 residents in the area are without power, according to local power officials. There have been two “fall-related” injuries, as of 7a this morning, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Medford Alert received a number of concerned inquiries from Rogue Valley residents as some alerts were sent to their devices regarding the earthquake. Those alerts were not for our area specifically, and no damage or injuries were reported locally, from the earthquake.
