Medford Fire Department Provides Lithium-Ion Battery Tips

If you use a scooter or any other device powered by lithium-ion batteries, the Medford Fire Department (MFD) is urging safety. Officials report an increase in fires lately caused by these batteries.

In this situation below, the person was charging his scooter batteries (which he bought secondhand) on his apartment windowsill, when they overheated and exploded.

Here’s some safety tips to keep in mind if using lithium-ion batteries:

When purchasing devices, be sure that the equipment has the Underwriters Laboratories Mark. The UL mark shows that the product has been safety tested.

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage.

• Do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or on a couch.

• Keep batteries/devices at room temperature. Do not place in direct sunlight.

Officials say when these batteries fail, they can be unpredictable and hazardous.
