Firefighters Respond to Suspicious Wildfires Near Ashland

At approximately 4:44p today, 911 dispatchers received a call stating there was a fire on the 500 block of Glenview Drive in Ashland.

The flames were estimated to be about 50ft tall from the witness. The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Camera Detection Network confirmed two medium sized smoke columns coming from the area.

Multiple Ashland Fire (AFR), Jackson County Fire District 5 (JCFD5), and ODF units were dispatched to the scene. A Type I helicopter was put on standby, but was not activated. Several Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) units were also sent to assist with traffic and any possible evacuations.

Several residents near one of the fires were concerned and asked dispatchers about any possible evacuations. As of 5:10p, no evacuations were issued.

One team of firefighters quickly knocked down one of the fires. There was a second fire that was being worked on that did require the majority of effort and personnel.

Law enforcement in the area were searching for at least one subject in connection with these fires. At this time, authorities believe the fires to be human caused. Officers are searching from the Lithia Park trail entrance area, moving towards the area of the fire starts.

The City of Ashland stated that firefighters are making good progress on the fires shortly after 5:15p.

At 5:29p, fire command stated the fires have both been stopped and are now in mop up phases. Investigators are also on scene working the incident.

At 5:38p, officials stated that there were three total fires that they responded to in the Glenview Dr area. At this time, there is no community threat from the fires.

FINAL UPDATE: Two of the fires were approximately 1/2 acre each. Both are fully knocked down and wet-lined. The third fire put itself out, according to radio traffic.
