Police Confirm Nine People Were Inside Classroom During Silver Rail Elementary Shooting

BEND, Ore. (Oct. 19, 2026) — Four adults and five children were inside a classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School when a shooting left multiple people dead and injured Oct. 15, the Bend Police Department confirmed Monday as investigators continued working on the case.

In an update released Oct. 19, police said investigators expect to complete evidence collection inside the school building Monday afternoon and turn the facility over to the Bend-La Pine Schools district. The investigation will continue after the building is returned to the district.

Police said investigators, the Tri-County Major Incident Team and other department personnel continue to work on the investigation into the shooting, which devastated the Bend community.

The department said it is not releasing additional information about the suspect, the weapon used or other investigative details while the case remains active.

Police acknowledged that community members and members of the media continue to have questions, and urged the public to rely on official updates from the Bend Police Department and Bend-La Pine Schools amid what the department described as widespread misinformation.

Investigators also cautioned that information may change as a case progresses and additional evidence is reviewed.

School evidence collection nearing completion

As the investigation at the school building concludes, the FBI’s Victim Services Division is assisting families in collecting belongings left behind in unaffected areas of Silver Rail Elementary.

Police said victim advocates completed the process for school staff members over the weekend. The collection process is not taking place at the elementary school, and officials asked the public to give families and staff members privacy as they grieve.

Increased police presence planned as students return

With most students expected to return to Bend-La Pine Schools on Wednesday, Oct. 21, Bend police said they are coordinating with the district’s safety team to provide an increased law enforcement presence.

Officers are expected to be visible in and around school campuses Wednesday and for the foreseeable future, according to the department.

Officials encouraged community members affected by the shooting to seek support as they navigate the aftermath of the tragedy.
