PORTLAND, Ore. (Sep. 24, 2026) — A wanted man and a Portland Police Bureau K9 were killed Thursday afternoon after members of the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force encountered the subject during an operation in Southeast Portland, authorities said.
The shooting happened at about 1:45 p.m. near Southeast 97th Avenue and Southeast Oak Street while the task force was working a case on behalf of the East County Major Crimes Team. The task force includes members from multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, the task force encountered a wanted subject and shots were fired. Despite lifesaving efforts, an adult male was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered.
Preliminary information indicates two Portland police officers and two officers from other agencies were involved in the shooting. The two Portland officers were placed on paid administrative leave, as required by bureau policy.
A Portland police K9 also was injured in the shooting and taken to an animal hospital. The department later announced that K9 Kylo died from his injuries.
Kylo served the Portland community for six years and was scheduled to work his final shift Thursday. The Police Bureau said additional information about Kylo’s service and accomplishments will be released later.
The Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is investigating the shooting.
Portland Police Chief Bob Day and Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez responded to the scene. Mayor Keith Wilson and City Administrator Raymond C. Lee were briefed on the incident.
As part of the bureau’s use-of-force review process, an internal review will examine the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used and actions taken after the shooting.
The case also will be reviewed by the Police Review Board, which includes community members, bureau personnel and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
The bureau said investigative files and any grand jury transcripts associated with the case will be posted on its Open Data page after the investigation and legal process are complete.
