


MEDFORD, Ore. (Aug. 9, 2026)— A vegetation fire near WinCo and the Royal Crest Hotel was extinguished Saturday after firefighters stopped the flames from spreading to nearby businesses, and a suspect was taken into custody after authorities determined the fire was intentionally set.
Multiple fire crews responded to the fire near 411 E. Barnett Road. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and remained at the scene to conduct mop-up operations.
The fire damaged three vehicles, a trailer and surrounding vegetation, and caused partial damage to New China Restaurant. Firefighters’ quick response and aggressive attack prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby hotel and other businesses.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was later confirmed to have been caused by arson. Video surveillance helped investigators identify a suspect, who was taken into custody by Medford police after officers contacted the individual on South Riverside.
The suspect was reportedly attempting to start another fire when officers made contact.
Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s name or information about potential charges.
Fire officials credited the quick response and coordination between firefighters and the Medford Police Department with preventing additional damage.
