GRANTS PASS, Ore. (Aug. 1, 2026) — Firefighters continued making progress Saturday evening on the I-5 Milepost 57 Northbound Fire in Josephine County, with night shift crews taking over suppression efforts as cooler temperatures and higher overnight humidity create more favorable firefighting conditions.
Incident officials said firefighters have established containment line around approximately 75% of the fire. Overnight operations will focus on strengthening and securing those lines to prevent any additional spread.
Night resources assigned to the fire include five bulldozers, five water tenders and five 20-person hand crews. Crews will spend the night reinforcing fireline, extinguishing hotspots, removing hazardous fire-weakened trees and securing the fire’s perimeter.
An unmanned aircraft system equipped with infrared technology is currently mapping the fire perimeter. Officials said updated acreage and mapping information will be released in Sunday morning’s incident update.
Weather conditions are expected to aid firefighting efforts overnight, with cooler temperatures and strong relative humidity recovery forecast across the fire area.
A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in effect over the incident. Fire officials continue urging the public not to fly drones near the fire, warning that unauthorized aircraft can force firefighting aircraft to land, delaying suppression efforts and creating unnecessary safety hazards.
Evacuations remain in effect for areas impacted by the fire.
