PROVOLT, Ore. (Jul. 6, 2026) — A structure fire along Williams Highway prompted a multi-agency emergency response Monday, forcing the temporary closure of a section of Oregon Highway 238 as firefighters worked to protect nearby vegetation and surrounding properties. The highway has since reopened.
Fire crews from the Applegate Fire District were joined by mutual aid partners, including the Oregon Department of Forestry, Rural Metro Fire – Josephine County, and Grants Pass Fire, in battling the blaze.
The Oregon Department of Forestry deployed a Type 6 engine and a Type 2 helicopter to assist with structure protection efforts and prevent the fire from spreading into surrounding wildland vegetation.
Authorities said multiple local road closures are in effect throughout the area to allow emergency personnel to safely combat the fire.
The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that Oregon Highway 238 is impacted near milepost 14.31, east of the intersection with Williams Highway in Provolt, due to the fire. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible.
No information on injuries, the cause of the fire, or the extent of damage was immediately available.
