MEDFORD, Ore. (Jul. 6, 2026) — A burglary suspect accused of stealing multiple firearms was taken into custody Monday afternoon following a lengthy SWAT standoff at a residence in east Medford, authorities said.
The investigation began Wednesday, July 1, when detectives with the Medford Police Department responded to a residential burglary in the 1300 block of Lawnridge Street. Investigators determined that several items, including multiple firearms, had been stolen from the home.
Detectives developed probable cause to arrest 44-year-old Richard Estrada Jr. in connection with the burglary. Officers attempted to contact Estrada near a residence on North Keene Way Drive on July 1, but he fled on a bicycle through nearby neighborhoods. The pursuit ended in the area of Inner Circle off Brookhurst Street, where officers lost sight of him and were unable to locate him.
At approximately 9 a.m. Monday, detectives confirmed Estrada was inside a residence in the 1800 block of Grandview Ave. Officers surrounded the home and evacuated its occupants before activating the Medford Police Department SWAT team.
Authorities said multiple rounds of chemical irritants were deployed into the residence during the standoff. At approximately 12:45 p.m., Estrada exited the home and surrendered without incident.
Estrada was arrested and is expected to be lodged at the Jackson County Jail on charges including first-degree burglary, first-degree theft and multiple additional charges related to the incidents. Formal charges will be determined by prosecutors.
Police said all roads in the area have reopened and thanked the public for its patience during the incident.
