HILLSBORO, Ore. (Mar. 24, 2026) — A bullet discovered inside the Islamic Community Center of Hillsboro earlier this month was likely the result of an errant shot fired from outside city limits, not an intentional act, police said.
The incident occurred Saturday, March 21, when the Hillsboro Police Department responded to a report of a bullet found داخل the place of worship. The building was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Authorities said the discovery caused understandable concern, particularly as it involved a place of worship and came shortly after a significant religious observance. Police acknowledged the fear and anxiety experienced by members of the Islamic Community Center and the broader community.
Detectives launched a comprehensive investigation, conducting scene analysis, reviewing video footage, processing evidence and following leads beyond the immediate area. Investigators determined the bullet was likely fired from approximately one mile away, outside Hillsboro city limits, where individuals were lawfully target shooting.
Police said those individuals are cooperating with the investigation. Evidence indicates the bullet that entered the building was an errant projectile, possibly a ricochet, that traveled a significant distance before striking the structure.
At this time, officials said there is no evidence the Islamic Community Center was intentionally targeted. Detectives have consulted with the Washington County District Attorney’s Office and said the case will be referred for review if evidence of a crime emerges.
“While the findings indicate this was not an intentional act, we understand the fear it caused in our community, and we support those affected,” Hillsboro Police Chief Jim Coleman said. “From the start, our detectives conducted a detailed and careful investigation to identify the facts. I am proud of their dedication and professionalism. We remain committed to keeping everyone in Hillsboro safe.”
Hillsboro Mayor Beach Pace said the city stands united in support of the local Muslim community.
“Part of who we are in Hillsboro is standing up for each other whenever there is a potential threat to safety or well-being, including the ability to worship,” Pace said. “Hillsboro stands in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters and their right to congregate and worship safely, and we want to make sure that they and everyone in Hillsboro are safe.”
Police said they will continue working with community members and partners to ensure a safe environment for all.
