Medford Fire Crews Contain Morning Structure Fire on West 13th Street

MEDFORD, Ore. (Dec 14, 2025) — Medford fire crews responded early Sunday to a structure fire involving a homemade, wood-burning sauna in a residential backyard, officials said.

The fire was reported at approximately 12:17 a.m. Dec. 14 in the area of West 13th Street. Engine 12 arrived to find flames coming from a homemade, enclosed wood-burning sauna attached to a small deck and hot tub area behind a residence.

Neighbors and the occupant were using garden hoses in an effort to control the fire before firefighters arrived. Crews initiated an offensive fire attack and were able to quickly contain the blaze to the area of origin, preventing it from spreading to the main residence or nearby structures.

The sauna and attached deck sustained significant damage. No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported.

Medford Firefighters Local 824 issued a safety reminder following the incident, urging residents to use only approved saunas that are properly installed by certified professionals. Officials also emphasized the importance of fully extinguishing fires and completely shutting down wood-burning or other heat-producing equipment after use.

The exact cause of the fire was not immediately released.
