Dog-of-the-Week: “Java” is a Smart Chocolate Lab Looking for a Family

Phoenix, Oregon- This week’s Medford Alert News “Dog of the Week” is Java, a 1-year, 3-month-old female chocolate Labrador Retriever mix who weighs about 50 pounds and is ready to find her forever home at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Java arrived at the shelter as a stray, so her background is unknown. However, staff quickly discovered that she’s already well-trained — knowing how to sit, shake, lie down, stay, and come on command. She walks nicely on a leash, refrains from jumping, and learns new things quickly when motivated by treats.

According to shelter staff, Java has participated in dog playgroups and gets along well with a variety of dogs. Initially timid and fearful of new people and situations, she has since made great progress thanks to the patience and care of staff and volunteers.

“Java is looking for people who will be her friend, show her patience, and give her time to adjust to new situations,” shelter representatives said. “In turn, she will be your devoted friend.”

To help prospective adopters better understand Java’s temperament, the shelter has provided the following overview:

Energy Level

• Medium – She enjoys moderate exercise and relaxing afterward.

Personality

• New experiences can be a little scary, but she just needs time and reassurance. Would do best in a calm, low-traffic home.

Skills

• Knows advanced commands: sit, shake, lie down, stay, and come.

• Leash Manners

• Walks well on a leash but is still building confidence.

Additional Notes

Treats are a great way to earn her trust and help her open up. Has previously lived with other dogs and enjoys canine companionship. Requires a patient and experienced adopter. Must meet any resident dogs prior to adoption. May try to run if startled, so supervision and security are important. Takes treats gently and continues to show more of her personality each day.
