Lincoln County, Oregon- A crash on Elk City Road in rural Lincoln County escalated into an exchange of gunfire between two drivers Thursday afternoon, leaving both men with gunshot wounds and one in custody, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched around 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 10 to a reported two-vehicle crash near milepost 12 on Elk City Road. Initial information indicated that gunfire was exchanged between the people in both vehicles after the collision, authorities said.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies responded to the scene as the situation developed.
At about 2:01 p.m., Toledo Police officers located Jacob Barnhart near milepost 12 with a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers administered first aid and called for a medical helicopter. Barnhart was airlifted from Eddyville to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis. Before being transported, he was able to provide officers with a description of the other vehicle and suspect involved, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators and assisting agencies began a regional search for the second vehicle and its driver.
At approximately 5:45 p.m., authorities received another report of a gunshot victim in the 100 block of Jacobson Road, near the site of the original crash. Responding officers identified the injured man as Dyllan Nicholas Thompson, 27, of Toledo. He told deputies he had been involved in a vehicle crash earlier that day on Elk City Road and sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
Thompson was taken to Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital in Newport for treatment. Following an interview with investigators, he was arrested on charges of first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The case remains under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone who was traveling on Elk City Road between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Oct. 10 to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 541-265-0777.
The investigation involves assistance from the Oregon State Police, Toledo Police Department, Newport Police Department, Lincoln City Police Department, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Philomath Police Department, and the Lincoln County Major Crime Team, which includes members of the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office.
All suspects are believed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law
