


Shady Cove, Oregon- A 72-year-old man died and another driver was seriously injured Tuesday after a head-on crash on Highway 62 in Shady Cove, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the 20000 block of Highway 62 at 2:18 p.m. after dispatchers received a report of a collision involving multiple vehicles. When first responders arrived, they found one driver deceased and another critically hurt.
The deceased was identified as John Steven Renfro, 72, of Shady Cove. His family has been notified, deputies said.
The second driver was airlifted by Mercy Flights to a local hospital, where they remain in stable condition.
Investigators said Renfro was driving a Toyota Tundra northbound near Cindy Way when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed the centerline and struck a southbound Dodge Durango head-on.
Highway 62 was closed for about four hours while the Jackson County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team, medical examiners, and other agencies investigated the scene.
The STAR Team includes members from JCSO, Medford Police Department, Ashland Police Department, Central Point Police Department, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation.
