Medford Police to Conduct Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation Friday

RCC SOU Medford

Medford, Oregon- The Medford Police Department, in collaboration with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, will conduct a targeted pedestrian safety enforcement operation on Friday, May 30, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the intersection of 8th Street and Bartlett Street near the SOU/RCC campus.

The operation aims to raise public awareness about pedestrian safety and enforce Oregon’s right-of-way laws using a decoy pedestrian. The intersection is known for its heavy foot traffic and features a marked crosswalk, though police remind the public that state law recognizes every intersection as having a crosswalk, whether marked or unmarked.

Officers will be monitoring for two specific violations: drivers who fail to stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks, and drivers who pass vehicles already stopped at a crosswalk. These actions violate ORS 811.028 and ORS 811.020, respectively. Both offenses carry a presumptive fine of $265.

Police urge drivers to remain vigilant and follow the law: stop if a pedestrian is in your lane or the adjacent one, and never pass a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk—it may be yielding to someone on foot.

Authorities say the goal is to prevent accidents and keep local roads safe for everyone.
