Medford, Oregon- Dollar Tree and AutoZone are set to expand their presence in the Medford area, repurposing former retail spaces left vacant by national chains that have recently shuttered.

Dollar Tree is remodeling the former Party City location near the intersection of OR-62 and Owen Drive in northeast Medford. This site became available following Party City’s announcement in December 2024 to close all its corporate-owned U.S. stores by February 28, 2025, as part of a liquidation process. The company auctioned off leases for nearly 700 store locations across 45 states, with Dollar Tree acquiring 150 of these leases. The new Dollar Tree store, which will be the eighth in the Medford metro area, is expected to open in late summer or early fall 2025.

Meanwhile, AutoZone is converting the former Rite Aid location at the Medford Center into its newest store. Rite Aid vacated the space following its first round of store closures amid bankruptcy proceedings initiated in October 2023.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection again in May 2025, citing $8.6 billion in debt and legal challenges tied to the opioid crisis. As part of its restructuring efforts, Rite Aid has closed or announced the closure of over 775 stores, representing approximately 38% of its pre-bankruptcy locations. AutoZone, which currently operates two stores in Medford, anticipates opening the new location in fall 2025.

These developments reflect a broader trend of discount and automotive retailers expanding into spaces left by traditional chains facing economic headwinds.
