Heavy Snowfall and Rain Expected in Southern Oregon and Northern California

Medford, Oregon- Northern California and southern Oregon are preparing for significant winter weather as a powerful storm system is expected to bring heavy snowfall, strong winds, and moderate rainfall beginning tonight and continuing through the weekend.

Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories in Effect

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Northern California and a Winter Weather Advisory for Jackson County, particularly in and around Mount Shasta, where snowfall rates could reach 1.0 inch per hour this afternoon and evening. Higher elevations above 4,000 feet could experience even higher rates of 1.5 to 2.0 inches per hour. Forecast data suggests a 95% chance of at least 12 inches of snow within 24 hours and a 75% chance of at least 18 inches.

Snowfall is expected to create hazardous driving conditions along Interstate 5 through southern Siskiyou County, where 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation is anticipated. The Wednesday evening commute could be particularly dangerous as heavy snowfall may reduce visibility and road conditions.

A Winter Weather Advisory is also in place for the southern Oregon Cascades and parts of the eastside, where moderate snowfall and gusty winds are expected. Breezy conditions could make travel more difficult, especially at higher elevations.

Coastal Rain and Flooding Risk

Moderate rainfall is expected to develop along coastal areas starting tonight and continuing through tomorrow. A marginal risk for excessive rainfall exists, which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas. Drivers and residents are advised to remain cautious, as water accumulation could impact roadways and drainage systems.

Extended Forecast and Additional Storms

While conditions are expected to improve on Thursday, another storm system is expected to move in quickly, bringing further hazards through the weekend. Snow levels could drop as low as 1,000 to 1,500 feet by Friday morning, but it remains uncertain whether this will coincide with active precipitation.

The Rogue Valley faces uncertainty regarding snowfall impacts, with accumulations around Ashland potentially reaching an inch or less. The sun’s angle and recent mild afternoon temperatures may limit accumulation, particularly in valley areas.

The southern Oregon Cascades and parts of Siskiyou County are expected to experience hazardous weather through Sunday night, with the potential for additional snowfall and wind impacts. Further updates will refine snowfall totals and expected conditions as the system develops.

Air Travel and Wind Impacts

East of the Cascades, VFR conditions are expected through the forecast period, though increasing southwest winds could reach up to 35 knots by early Wednesday morning. Strong southeast winds are also forecast for the southern Rogue Valley, which may cause localized turbulence and difficult flight conditions.
