Salem, Oregon- The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has warned of increased fire risk due to a prolonged dry weather pattern and strong east winds forecasted. Residents are urged to monitor and patrol debris or slash burn sites from previous months to prevent potential wildfires.
According to ODF, embers from past burns can remain active beneath the surface, even during winter, and may reignite under dry and windy conditions. The National Weather Service has predicted east winds with gusts reaching up to 30 mph, increasing the likelihood of fire starts.
Blake Ellis, ODF’s Fire Operations Manager, highlighted the significance of fire awareness during these conditions. “This dry, windy weather is what reminds us that fire can happen in any season, not just summer,” Ellis stated.
ODF advised individuals to check burn sites for residual heat. If heat is detected, they should saturate the area with water, stir the materials, and repeat the process until the site is completely cool to the touch.
Statewide ODF districts are prepared to respond to any new fire starts during the weekend. Weather forecasts suggest that similar conditions, including light easterly winds and below-freezing overnight temperatures, may persist through the end of January and potentially into February.
