Salem Police Involved Shooting, Leaves Suspect Dead as OSP Investigates

Marion County, Oregon– The Oregon State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Salem on January 22, 2025.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., Salem Police officers were pursuing a suspect, identified as Shawn Lee Baker, 42, near River Road and Gardenia Drive. Authorities confirmed that Baker was wanted and armed with a firearm. He fled into an apartment complex in the 3200 block of River Road North, heading toward a residential unit.

According to police, two officers, Chad Galusha and John Diaz, confronted Baker during the pursuit. Shots were fired, striking the suspect. Despite immediate medical attention from police and medics, Baker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Galusha has served with the Salem Police Department for 16 years, while Officer Diaz has been with the department for 23 years. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

No officers were injured during the incident. Additional personnel from the Keizer Police Department also responded to the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, with no further details released at this time.
