Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Mission Saves Stranded Oregon Motorists

Linn County, Oregon- A coordinated rescue operation on Highway 20 near milepost 68 successfully located and aided a lost and distressed motorist this morning.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., an Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish and Wildlife Trooper discovered a vehicle on the shoulder of the highway. Upon investigation, the trooper determined that the vehicle’s occupant, a 30-year-old woman, had left her car for unknown reasons and walked up a nearby U.S. Forest Service road.

Linn County Search and Rescue, assisted by an OSP Fish and Wildlife K-9 team, responded to the scene. The K-9 team, led by K-9 Scout, tracked the woman to a location about one mile from her vehicle. Troopers provided immediate assistance by building a fire and supplying food and emergency blankets while awaiting search and rescue personnel, who transported her back to the highway using a snowcat.

Medics from the Sweet Home Fire Department later transported the individual to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.

While the rescue was underway, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office received two additional reports of motorists stranded on snow-covered forest roads. Sheriff Michelle Duncan urged motorists to prepare for winter conditions, stating, “This is a good reminder for motorists to always have a plan and adequate equipment if traveling or recreating in the snow. Always let a friend or family member know your destination and carry a cell phone or rescue beacon. It’s always a good idea to keep your car winter ready with safety items such as extra blankets or warm clothing, extra food and water, a first aid kit, and other survival items.”

OSP Captain Kyle Kennedy emphasized the importance of preparedness during winter travel, adding, “Winter weather can be unpredictable and conditions can change quickly. This rescue was a great team effort, and we are grateful this individual was quickly located and transported to safety.”

Authorities remind travelers to exercise caution and prioritize safety when venturing into remote areas during the winter season.
