Coos Bay, Oregon– A landslide has undercut a portion of Cape Arago Highway, prompting closures to vehicle traffic at Cape Arago and Shore Acres state parks. The incident occurred Friday, January 3, just south of Sunset Bay State Park, during a severe winter storm.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) announced that flooding in Sunset Bay State Park led to the evacuation of its campground at approximately 8 a.m. The campground, which had 19 reservations at the time of the evacuation, is expected to remain closed into next week.
While the Sunset Bay day-use area remains open, it may also close if flooding continues. Restroom facilities at the park have been shuttered, but portable toilets are currently available for visitors.
OPRD has not provided a timeline for repairs to the Cape Arago Highway, noting that the road closure between Sunset Bay and Shore Acres state parks may last for an extended period. Park staff will assess the damage after the storm subsides later this weekend.
Visitors are encouraged to monitor updates on park and road closures via the OPRD website or by contacting the park office at 541-888-3778.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
