Red Cross Offers Holiday Fire Safety Tips to Protect Families

Portland, Oregon– The holiday season is a time for celebration and gathering, but it also brings an increased risk of home fires due to candles, decorations, and heating sources. To address these risks, the American Red Cross Cascades Region is encouraging families to take precautions to ensure a safe holiday season.

“December is the peak time for home fires involving candles and holiday decorations,” said Priscilla Fuentes, CEO of the Cascades Region Red Cross. “Help protect your family by using battery-operated candles, ensuring your smoke alarms are functional, and practicing a two-minute escape plan with everyone in your household.”

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips

The Red Cross offers the following guidelines to prevent fire hazards during the holidays:

• Candle Safety: If using candles, keep them away from flammable items and out of reach of pets and children. Never leave them unattended while burning.

• Inspect Holiday Lights: Check all light cords for fraying or damage, and avoid connecting more than three strands of lights per extension cord.

• Outdoor Decorations: Use decorations designed for outdoor use and securely fasten them. Use insulated hooks or nails to minimize the risk of electrical hazards.

• Christmas Trees: For artificial trees, ensure they are labeled fire-resistant. Keep live trees fresh by watering them regularly, and avoid placing any type of tree near heat sources like fireplaces or radiators.

• Mantel Safety: Avoid lighting fireplaces when stockings or decorations are hanging nearby.

Smoke Alarm Maintenance

The Red Cross emphasizes the importance of smoke alarms on every level of the home and near all sleeping areas. These alarms should be tested monthly, with batteries replaced annually. For those unable to afford or install smoke alarms, local Red Cross chapters may offer assistance.

Home Fire Campaign Impact

The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, launched in October 2014, has helped save over 2,200 lives by educating families about fire safety, assisting with escape plans, and installing free smoke alarms in at-risk areas. Families can learn more about this campaign or request assistance at redcross.org/homefires.

To further prepare for emergencies, the Red Cross recommends downloading the free Emergency app, available in app stores by searching “American Red Cross.”

By following these precautions, families can reduce the risk of holiday fires and ensure a safer, more enjoyable season.
