Myrtle Creek, Oregon– A 22-year-old man was arrested on December 7, 2024, in connection with a fatal shooting at the Rivers West RV Park in Myrtle Creek.
At approximately 1:35 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the RV park at 333 Ruckles Drive after receiving reports of a physical disturbance and gunfire. Law enforcement located Damion Sumner, 29, of Dillard, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on Booth Ranch Road, just south of the RV park.
Emergency responders, including deputies and a Myrtle Creek Police Officer, provided aid to Sumner at the scene. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Authorities apprehended Daniel Hetrick, 22, of Myrtle Creek, nearby without incident. He was charged with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. Hetrick is currently being held at the Douglas County Jail.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team has launched an investigation into the incident. The team comprises detectives from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Roseburg Police Department, Oregon State Police, and the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, with support from Cow Creek Tribal Police.
Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the investigation is ongoing.
