Investigation Underway After Incendiary Device Found Inside Oregon Ballot Box

Portland, Oregon- On Monday, October 28, 2024, an investigation began following the discovery of an incendiary device placed inside a ballot box on the 1000 block of Southeast Morrison Street in Portland, Oregon. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m., prompting Central Precinct officers to respond to reports of a fire in the ballot box. By the time officers arrived, nearby security personnel had already extinguished the flames.

Upon investigation, officers determined that an incendiary device had been used to ignite the fire. Portland Police Bureau’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was called to the scene to assess and clear the device safely.

The Portland Fire Investigations Unit is now leading the investigation. This team includes fire investigators from Portland Fire & Rescue, who are also sworn law enforcement officers, along with a detective from the Portland Police Bureau. The unit employs specialized techniques, including analysis equipment and accelerant-detecting dogs, to examine fire scenes effectively.
