Wildfire Erupts Near Sulfur Springs Campground in Northern California

Siskiyou County, California- Firefighting resources are actively engaged in containing a new wildfire that broke out in the vicinity of Sulfur Springs Campground, Thursday afternoon. The fire is located south of Happy Camp in Northern California. The wildfire originated on the east side of Elk Creek, positioned between Cougar and Copper Creeks.

Known as the Sulfur Fire, the blaze was originally estimated to be approximately one acre, with ground crews and air attack units coordinating efforts to suppress its spread. Despite challenges posed by rough terrain and dense vegetation, ground crews are diligently working to gain access to the fire zone.

The latest reports indicate that the Sulfur Fire has expanded to roughly two acres, burning at a moderate rate of spread. The fire is situated in rugged terrain at the top third of a slope, characterized by timber and significant accumulation of dead and down fuels.

Air tankers have been deployed to encircle the fire perimeter with retardant drops, bolstering containment efforts. As evening descended, air resources have been temporarily withdrawn from the fire zone, while ground crews and equipment persist in their advancement towards the blaze.

With additional resources slated to arrive on scene tomorrow, firefighting efforts are expected to intensify in a bid to swiftly contain the Sulfur Fire and prevent further escalation.

At this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation. There have been no reported injuries as of this evening.
