Backpack Found on Rogue River Trail Prompts Concern for Missing Person

Josephine County, Oregon- On Friday, May 17, 2024, at approximately 4:44 pm, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office received a citizen report regarding a backpack and dog leash discovered on the Rogue River Trail. The concerned citizen noted the absence of any individual or pet in the vicinity upon encountering the items during their descent along the trail. Subsequently, upon exiting the trail later that afternoon, the citizen notified the Sheriff’s Office upon observing the backpack and its contents still untouched.

Responding to the report on Saturday, May 18, 2024, a Josephine County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a hike along the trail, eventually locating the backpack approximately 1 mile south of the Grave Creek Boat Ramp. Despite conducting verbal callouts and utilizing a drone in an attempt to locate the owner, no individual or dog was found in the area. Further investigation indicated that the backpack had likely been positioned there since Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

Analysis of the backpack’s contents revealed preparations indicative of a multi-day camping excursion, with items appearing unused. However, no identifying information was found within the pack, deepening concerns regarding the whereabouts of its owner. The Sheriff’s Office underscores the potential for injury or loss on the part of the backpack’s owner.

As of now, no missing persons reports align with the circumstances, and there is no evidence of foul play. Nevertheless, the Sheriff’s Office is actively engaged in efforts to locate the owner of the backpack.
