Protesters Block Interstate 5, Leading to Arrests and Traffic Disruption

Eugene, Oregon- At around 10:00a, Oregon State Troopers responded to reports of protesters obstructing traffic on Interstate 5 southbound at milepost 194 in Eugene. Demonstrators had effectively blocked all southbound lanes near the Barlow Bridge, prompting a significant law enforcement response.

Despite repeated lawful orders to disperse, demonstrators persisted, resulting in the arrest of dozens for disorderly conduct. Additionally, authorities discovered at least one individual in possession of a firearm during the incident.

The interstate closure lasted approximately 45 minutes, causing disruptions for motorists. While southbound lanes have since reopened, law enforcement personnel remain present as onlookers continue to gather along the highway.

Oregon State Police emphasized the importance of lawful protest but condemned actions that endanger both motorists and protesters. “Today’s actions put Oregon’s motorists in danger as well as the protestors who blocked the roadway,” stated an Oregon State Police spokesperson.

Due to ongoing criminal investigations, further comments on the incident are currently limited. Oregon State Police reiterated their support for individuals’ rights to express concerns through lawful means while stressing the need for safety and adherence to the law.


UPDATE: Oregon State Police released the following information regarding todays earlier I5 pro-Palestinian protest:

As a result of this morning’s demonstration, 52 people were arrested for disorderly conduct. Two individuals were additionally charged with conspiracy and theft 2. All suspects are in custody at the Lane County Jail. 

Six vehicles were towed from the scene. 

Today’s incident required a significant law enforcement response. Responding agencies included: 

  • Eugene Police Department – 31 officers; 1 transport van 
  • Springfield Police Department – 22 officers; 1 transport van
  • Lane County Sheriff’s Office – 20 deputies; 2 jail vans    
  • Oregon State Police – 48 troopers 
  • Oregon Department of Transportation Incident Response – 6 personnel 
  • Springfield Fire Department and Eugene Fire Department
