Klamath County, Oregon– Oregon State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at approximately 12:20 p.m. The incident occurred on Hwy-97, near milepost 281, in Klamath County. The preliminary investigation revealed a sequence of events that led to the collision.
According to initial findings, a southbound Ford Econoline van, driven by Carl Francis Kollmar (44) of Klamath Falls, attempted to make a left turn into a driveway. The van crossed into the path of a northbound Peterbilt commercial motor vehicle, operated by Donny Kart Starr (51) of Turlock, California. The ensuing collision was head-on, propelling the Ford van backward into a southbound Ford Focus, operated by Kessandra Malan Boyd Zambrano (29) of Haquiam, Washington.
Scott Lane Nelson (67) of Klamath Falls, a passenger in the Ford Econoline, sustained critical injuries in the crash. Despite immediate medical attention and transportation to a local hospital, Nelson was declared deceased.
The driver of the Ford Econoline, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The operator of the Peterbilt, emerged from the collision unhurt. The driver of the Ford Focus, suffered minor injuries and was also transported to an area hospital.
The aftermath of the incident led to an hour-long closure of the highway, impacting traffic flow as investigators examined the scene. The Oregon State Police were assisted in their efforts by District 1 Fire and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with relevant information about the crash to come forward.
