Teenager Dies After Officer Involved Shooting in Bend

Bend, Oregon– The Major Incident Team has been mobilized to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on March 20, 2024, along Highway 97 near mile post 136. Led by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, the team, in collaboration with the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office and the City of Bend Police Department, is actively probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to initial findings, Gabriel Keith Platz, an 18-year-old resident of Bend, was involved in an altercation with officers from the City of Bend Police Department.

The investigation suggests that Platz brandished a firearm during this encounter, prompting an officer to discharge their agency-issued firearm.

The precise sequence of events leading to the use of lethal force is part of the ongoing investigation. As such, the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office urges the public to await further updates as more information becomes available.
