Severe Ice Storm Causes Prolonged Delays on Northbound Interstate 5

Lane County, Oregon- Commuters heading north on Interstate 5 are experiencing extended delays, with traffic backed up for several miles, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) predicts delays of two or more hours. Despite the interstate remaining open, the severity of the ice storm forecast for Monday night raises concerns.

Another impending cold snap and the anticipated freezing rain on Tuesday have prompted ODOT to advise travelers to postpone their trips. In response to the severe weather conditions, crews have applied an increased amount of deicer and salt, making more passes with plows than in the past decade. However, their efforts are hindered by the extreme weather conditions.

One significant contributor to the slowdown is the failure of some vehicles to chain up or stop to chain up in the travel lanes. Law enforcement has now begun citing violators of the chain law, emphasizing the importance of compliance for everyone’s safety.

While alternative routes are typically considered during traffic disruptions, they are not viable in this scenario. Less maintained in winter weather and impacted by the ice storm, these routes offer no respite for travelers seeking an escape from the delays on Interstate 5.

If rescheduling your trip is not an option, ODOT recommends that travelers equip themselves with chains and be prepared to install them on their vehicles. Anticipate prolonged delays due to severe packed ice and the likelihood of traffic coming to a standstill for extended periods.

Additionally, residents of areas south of Eugene are urged to prepare for potential power failures, and fuel stations may run out of fuel. Finding parking spaces could also become challenging as the ice storm takes its toll on the region.
