Suspect Dead, Officer Injured After Grants Pass Shooting

This is an update to our ongoing coverage of this incident.

Grants Pass, Oregon– On Friday, December 15, 2023, law enforcement officers from the Oregon State Police, Grants Pass Police Department, and Josephine County Sheriff’s Office were in pursuit of a suspect involved in a homicide investigation. The pursuit, which started near Grants Pass, came to a dramatic end at Highway 199 and Allen Creek Road.

At approximately 12:10 p.m., officers located the suspect, identified as Kelly Lynn Mason (48), in a vehicle. Mason, attempting to evade arrest, fled from law enforcement officers who engaged in a pursuit that ultimately concluded at the intersection of Highway 199 and Allen Creek Road.

During the course of the incident, law enforcement officers from all three agencies discharged their duty weapons. Mason was pronounced deceased on the scene. The circumstances surrounding the use of lethal force are currently under investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

One law enforcement officer present during the confrontation sustained non-life-threatening injuries. As per standard protocol outlined in Senate Bill 111 for deadly force incidents, all involved officers have been placed on traumatic event leave pending the investigation.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the comprehensive inquiry into the incident, assembling a team of investigators from various agencies overseen by the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials say the collaboration aims to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the pursuit, use of force, and the events leading to the fatality of the suspect..
