On Sunday, October 22, 2023, in Albany, as authorities responded to a 911 call reporting a 3-year-old child found face-down in a residential pool.
At approximately 1:40 pm, the Albany Police Department received the emergency call, prompting a coordinated response from both Albany Police officers and the Albany Fire Department. Officers arrived at the scene first and immediately initiated life-saving efforts. When Albany Fire paramedics arrived, they continued these critical efforts before transporting the child to a nearby hospital.
However, due to the severity of the child’s condition, she was subsequently transferred to a Portland-area hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
As the initial investigation progressed, officers developed information that led them to suspect that the child’s condition may have resulted from an intentional act. The child’s mother, 30-year-old Kristen Brooks, was taken into custody and subsequently arrested on charges of Attempted Aggravated Murder and Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree. She is presently being held at the Linn County Jail.
The investigation is ongoing, and at this time, no further information was available for release.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
