Officers from the Albany Police Department responded to a welfare check request in the on Saturday morning, September 30th, 2023, at approximately 9:30 am.
Upon arriving at the residence, officers were met with sounds of a disturbance, and what appeared to be gunshots echoing from inside the home. Faced with a potential threat to the safety of those inside, officers immediately entered the residence.
Inside, they discovered a grim scene. One male, identified as Mark Brooner, aged 75, of Albany, was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Alongside him was a female, identified as Pauline Golliher, aged 63, also of Albany, who was critically injured. Despite attempts to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries, and passed away at the scene.
No other individuals were found within the residence, and investigators quickly determined that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Preliminary investigations have uncovered that Mark Brooner, the 75-year-old resident, is believed to have fatally shot his longtime girlfriend, Pauline Golliher, before turning the weapon on himself.
The Albany Police Department is actively collaborating with the Linn County District Attorney’s Office and the Linn County Medical Examiner’s Office as the investigation into this incident continues.
