Intermittent Closures Announced for US199 Starting Thursday

In an effort to expedite critical maintenance and repairs, U.S. 199 in Del Norte County will undergo intermittent, full closures beginning this Thursday. These closures will be in effect on weekdays from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m., stretching from Grassy Flat Campground east of Gasquet to Oregon Mountain Road. During the closure hours, the highway will be entirely inaccessible to motorists.

To facilitate smoother traffic flow, U.S. 199 will be open to one-way controlled traffic between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays. On weekends and outside the closure hours, one-way controlled traffic will also be in effect, as well as before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m. However, travelers are advised to expect delays of up to one hour during these open hours.

The maintenance work on U.S. 199 includes hazardous tree removal, the repair and replacement of damaged guardrails, and slope stabilization efforts. By implementing these intermittent, full closures, authorities aim to accelerate the repair process while ensuring the safety of road users. This strategy is particularly crucial as it allows work crews to concentrate on completing the necessary repairs before the rainy season begins.

Without these planned closures, the repair timeline would likely extend to two to three times its current duration.

It’s important to note that this schedule is subject to change in the event of safety risks to the traveling public or personnel.
