Newport Orders One-Mile Evacuation Zone After Fire at Pacific Seafood Facility

Newport Fire Port

NEWPORT, Ore. (Oct. 25, 2026)— Emergency evacuations were ordered for much of Newport’s historic Bayfront on Sunday morning after a reported fire at a Pacific Seafood facility raised concerns about possible ammonia contamination.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, emergency personnel responded at approximately 10:13 a.m. to reports of a possible fire at the Pacific Seafood plant, located at 213 SW Bay Blvd.

Newport Evacuation

By 10:34 a.m., the city of Newport announced an immediate evacuation of a one-mile radius surrounding the facility due to concerns about potential ammonia contamination in the area.

The evacuation order affected much of Newport’s Bayfront district, prompting officials to direct residents and others in the affected area to leave immediately.

City officials designated Sam Case Elementary School, located at 459 NE 12th St., as a gathering location for evacuees. Residents were advised that pets would be permitted at the location.

In addition to the evacuation order, officials recommended that people in Newport remain indoors and wear a mask if they must go outside.

Ammonia is commonly used as a refrigerant in seafood processing facilities. Exposure to elevated concentrations can cause respiratory irritation and other potentially serious health effects.

As of Sunday morning, authorities had not released additional information about the extent of the fire, whether ammonia had been released or whether any injuries had occurred.

The cause of the reported fire also remained unknown.

Officials have not announced when evacuated residents and businesses will be allowed to return.

Gov Kotek released the following statement:

We are closely monitoring the fire at Pacific Seafood in Newport.

Thank you to the first responders working tirelessly to protect lives and property. The state will continue to provide all resources necessary to support local fire teams on the ground.
