PORTLAND, Ore. (Oct. 15, 2026) — A man suspected of attacking and threatening people in downtown Portland was fatally shot by a police officer Thursday afternoon, Oct. 15, after officers arrived to find an assault in progress, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Two adult male victims were transported to a hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

Central Precinct officers responded at approximately 4:30 p.m. to reports of a suspect actively assaulting and threatening people in the downtown area.

According to police, the first responding officers arrived approximately three minutes after being dispatched and witnessed an assault in progress in the 400 block of Southwest Broadway.

During the encounter, an officer fired shots, striking the suspect.

Officers immediately began providing trauma first aid to the injured man while paramedics responded to the scene. The suspect, identified only as an adult male, was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he died despite lifesaving efforts.

Investigators subsequently located a box cutter with a broken blade at the scene.

The two victims, both adult males, were also transported by ambulance to a hospital. Following medical treatment, authorities said their injuries were believed to be serious but not life-threatening.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day, who responded to the scene, acknowledged the severity of the attack, praised the responding officers and expressed sadness over the loss of life.

“Officers interrupted a violent attack in progress, and I’m gratified to hear that the victims are going to recover,” said Chief Day, who responded to the scene. “I’m grateful to our police officers and other first responders who are asked to respond to the most dangerous and urgent emergencies we have. I’m saddened by the events here in Downtown Portland as a man died, and any loss of life is a tragedy for our community. Our Detective Division is working hard to get a full picture of what took place and ensure we have a full, comprehensive review.”

The incident prompted a significant emergency response in downtown Portland, with approximately 32 police units responding to the area.

Portland Fire & Rescue described the incident as a “multi-victim traumatic scene.”

The Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit responded to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez also responded to the scene.

The officer who discharged the firearm will be placed on administrative leave, consistent with standard procedures following an officer-involved shooting.

Authorities closed several streets surrounding the incident while investigators collected evidence and documented the scene.

Police have not released the identities of the suspect or the two victims. Additional details about the circumstances surrounding the initial assaults and the subsequent officer-involved shooting remain under investigation.

The Portland Police Bureau said its Detective Division is working to establish a comprehensive account of the incident.
