Firefighters Halt Rogue River Grass Fire After Flames Cross Interstate 5

ROGUE RIVER, Ore. (Oct. 14, 2026) — Firefighters stopped the forward progress of a grass fire near Rogue River on Tuesday after flames spread across Interstate 5, burning approximately 2 acres before crews were able to halt its advance.

The Foothill Boulevard Fire was initially reported as a quarter-acre grass fire along Foothill Boulevard, spreading at a moderate rate of speed. Firefighters launched an aggressive initial attack as additional resources were dispatched to assist with suppression efforts.

Crews from multiple agencies, including Jackson County Fire District No. 1 and Rural Metro Fire of Josephine County, responded to the incident.

By 3:55 p.m., the fire had grown to approximately 1 acre, with spotting activity carrying flames across Interstate 5 to the north side of the highway. Additional firefighting resources arrived as crews worked to contain the flames, making progress along the fire’s right flank.

At 4:20 p.m., fire officials announced that forward progress had been stopped despite the fire spreading to both sides of the interstate. The estimated size had increased to 2 acres.

In a final update issued at 6 p.m., officials reported that the fire remained at approximately 2 acres, with firefighters continuing suppression and mop-up operations.

According to fire officials, the fire’s location along the river corridor contributed to the spotting activity observed earlier in the afternoon. Winds in the area can increase the potential for embers to travel beyond the main fire and ignite additional vegetation.

Firefighters continued searching for remaining hot spots, extinguishing heat within the fire’s interior and strengthening containment lines to prevent further spread.

Initial reports indicate that equipment use may have caused the fire, although the circumstances remain under investigation. Officials said additional information would be released as it becomes available.

Motorists and residents were asked to avoid the area along Foothill Boulevard and Interstate 5 while emergency personnel and firefighting equipment continued operating near the incident.

Fire officials said the 6 p.m. announcement would be their final update unless conditions significantly changed.
