Two Arrested After Crowbar Assault in Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (Aug. 18, 2026) — Two Grants Pass residents were arrested after two people were injured during an early-morning physical fight Saturday, police said.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Aug. 15, Grants Pass Police officers responded to the 800 block of NE A Street following a report of a physical fight involving several people.

Officers determined that two victims had been injured after being struck with a crowbar. The victims requested medical assistance, and police detectives responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

During the initial response, officers developed probable cause to arrest Samantha Fillmore, 30, and Jeremy Whelchel, 45, both of Grants Pass.

Fillmore was taken into custody without incident.

Police said Whelchel was believed to be hiding inside a nearby apartment. Officers established containment around the residence while they obtained a search warrant.

Several hours later, officers executed the warrant and located Whelchel inside the apartment. He was taken into custody without incident.

Both Fillmore and Whelchel were lodged in the Josephine County Jail on charges of second-degree assault, third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

The case remains under investigation.

As with all criminal defendants, Fillmore and Whelchel are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
