Driver Killed After Vehicle Strikes Tree on Coyote Creek Road

NEAR GRANTS PASS, Ore. (Aug. 17, 2026) — A 68-year-old man was killed Monday afternoon after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a large tree on Coyote Creek Road, Josephine County authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 2:08 p.m. Aug. 17 in the 2500 block of Coyote Creek Road. First responders arrived to find a single vehicle that had traveled off the roadway and collided with a tree.

The driver, identified as Mark Freeland, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the initial investigation, Freeland was traveling outbound on Coyote Creek Road when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and struck the tree.

Authorities said Freeland’s next of kin has been notified.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information was immediately available.
