GRANTS PASS, Ore. (Aug. 14 , 2026)— A man was arrested Friday evening, less than 24 hours after he was identified as a person of interest in a major assault that left a man hospitalized in Grants Pass, police said.
Michael Cutts was arrested without incident at about 6:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, according to the Grants Pass Police Department.
Police said the investigation moved quickly in part because of automated license plate reader technology, known as ALPR, along with assistance from the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police.
Cutts was booked into the Josephine County Jail on multiple charges, including second-degree assault, first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon and contempt of court.
The case began shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, when Grants Pass 911 received an emergency call reporting a major assault on Southridge Way. A male victim was seriously injured and transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment.
Grants Pass patrol officers and Major Crimes detectives responded to the scene and hospital as investigators worked to identify a suspect.
Police later identified Cutts as a person of interest and sought information from the public.
The department credited the rapid arrest to ALPR technology, cooperation from law enforcement partners and assistance from community members who took an interest in the case.
The Grants Pass Police Department thanked the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and members of the community for their assistance in the investigation.
All suspects are believed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law
