SELMA, Ore. (Jun. 29, 2026) — A 42-year-old man has been arrested on manslaughter and firearm charges after a woman was found dead in a remote area near Selma following an overnight search that began with a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim, authorities said.
According to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a 911 call on June 27 reporting that a woman had suffered a gunshot wound in the Deer Creek Road area near Selma. The caller, who was in an area with poor cell phone service, was unable to provide an exact location before the call was disconnected. The caller later placed another call from a different location after leaving the scene.
Authorities attempted to re-establish contact with the caller but were unsuccessful. Deputies and troopers with the Oregon State Police searched the area throughout the day but were unable to locate the injured woman.
On June 28, detectives with the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Oregon State Police launched a coordinated investigation into the incident. A Bureau of Land Management deputy, assisted by two BLM rangers, resumed the search and located the body of 57-year-old Veronica Marie Gray in a remote area off Upper Deer Creek Road.
Investigators conducted multiple interviews and identified 42-year-old Monty Ryan Breedlove as the primary suspect in the case.
Breedlove was arrested and lodged in the Josephine County Jail on charges of first-degree manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm.
Authorities said Gray’s next of kin has been notified.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the sheriff’s office said no additional details are being released at this time.
