National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Warning for Southern Jackson County

MEDFORD, Ore. (Jun. 19, 2026) — The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for southern Jackson County on Friday, June 19, as a combination of dry fuels, lightning, gusty winds, and scattered thunderstorms creates conditions favorable for rapid wildfire growth. The warning remains in effect from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for Fire Weather Zone 621, which includes portions of southern Jackson County.

Forecasters say scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of Southern Oregon Friday afternoon and evening. While some storms may produce rainfall, others could generate lightning with little precipitation, increasing the potential for new fire starts in already dry vegetation. Thunderstorm outflow winds may also produce sudden and erratic gusts capable of rapidly spreading any fire that ignites.

The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings when weather conditions are expected to support extreme fire behavior. Officials emphasize that a Red Flag Warning does not indicate an active wildfire, but rather that critical fire weather conditions either exist or are expected to develop shortly.

Fire agencies are urging residents and visitors to avoid activities that could spark a wildfire, including outdoor burning, operating equipment that generates sparks, parking vehicles in dry grass, or improperly discarding smoking materials. Even a small ignition can quickly become dangerous under Red Flag conditions.

Southern Oregon has already experienced a stretch of warm and dry weather, allowing grasses and other fine fuels to cure earlier in the season. Combined with the threat of lightning and gusty winds, fire officials are closely monitoring conditions throughout the day.
