SANDY, Ore. (Jun. 1, 2026) — Multiple people were killed and a Sandy police officer was seriously wounded Sunday after officers responding to a reported domestic disturbance came under gunfire, prompting an hours-long standoff that ended with a suspect taken into custody, authorities said.
Sandy is a city of approximately 13,000 residents in Clackamas County, about 27 miles east of Portland along U.S. Highway 26. The community serves as a gateway to Mount Hood and is generally known for its small-town character and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Just before 4 p.m. Sunday, officers with the Sandy Police Department and deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Ross Avenue and Evans Street following reports of a domestic disturbance and shooting.
According to Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey, responding officers and deputies encountered gunfire upon arriving at the scene.
“Officers and deputies came under gunfire and returned fire at this time,” Huskey said during an evening news briefing.
One Sandy police officer was struck multiple times during the exchange and was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities said the officer is expected to survive.
Several other people were killed during the incident, though officials had not released the identities, ages, or exact number of victims as of Sunday night. Authorities also have not disclosed the relationship between the victims and the suspect.
Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded inside a residence, leading to a large-scale law enforcement response that included SWAT teams, tactical units, crisis negotiators and armored vehicles. The standoff lasted for several hours as officers worked to secure the area and safely resolve the situation.
At approximately 5 p.m., Sandy police issued a shelter-in-place order for residents living near the scene, urging people to remain indoors and lock their doors while law enforcement conducted operations.
The shelter-in-place order remained in effect for more than three hours before authorities announced at about 8:30 p.m. that the suspect had been taken into custody. Police subsequently lifted the order and said there was no longer a threat to the public.
Chief Huskey said the investigation remains active and will involve multiple agencies, including teams responsible for investigating officer-involved shootings. Authorities are expected to process the crime scene, interview witnesses and determine the sequence of events that led to the deadly confrontation.
The names of the victims, the injured officer and the suspect have not yet been released pending notification of family members and further investigation.
“This is a traumatic event for our community and the Sandy Police Department, and I know many people are grieving,” Huskey said. “I ask everyone in our community to keep the victims and our injured officer and families, friends, and all the first responders in their thoughts tonight.”
The shooting marks one of the most significant law enforcement incidents in Sandy in recent years. Additional information, including potential charges against the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the domestic disturbance, is expected to be released as investigators continue their work.
UPDATE: A 38-year-old man accused in a deadly domestic violence-related shooting in Sandy that left three people dead and a police officer seriously wounded was arraigned Monday on multiple murder and attempted murder charges.
Bryan Andrew Moore appeared Monday afternoon in Clackamas County Circuit Court, where prosecutors charged him with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Jenna Mary Overson, 37, Mary Beth Overson, 70, and Kobyn McClure, 16.
Moore also faces one count of attempted aggravated murder involving Sandy Police Department Sgt. Garrett Thornton, according to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office.
Additional charges include two counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.
Authorities said Moore is being held without bail at the Clackamas County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 8 at 2 p.m.
The charges stem from a May 31 incident in Sandy, a city of about 13,000 residents located roughly 30 miles east of Portland at the base of Mount Hood. The violence prompted a large law enforcement response and led to an exchange of gunfire between Moore and responding officers.
Sgt. Thornton was seriously injured during the confrontation. Officials have not released additional details about his condition.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is leading the criminal investigation into the deaths and related crimes. Meanwhile, the officer-involved shooting is being investigated separately by the Clackamas Interagency Major Crimes Team, a multi-jurisdictional task force that examines major incidents involving law enforcement.
No additional information about the circumstances leading to the shootings was immediately released Monday.
